<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a performance-superior liquid crystal element which has less optically non-effective area and causes no phase disturbance which is accompanied by a potential difference between adjacent electrodes, and to provide an optical pickup optical system. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element 14 includes a first transparent electrode layer 146 which drives a first liquid crystal layer 144 and a second transparent electrode layer 147. In addition, the same voltage is applied to the transparent electrode layer 146 to eliminate potential difference between the adjacent electrodes, and the same voltage different from the voltage applied to the transparent electrode layer 146 is applied to the transparent electrode layer 147. By this arrangement, the potential difference is eliminated between the adjacent electrodes, and a potential difference is generated between the transparent electrode layer 146 and the transparent electrode layer 147 to change the electrode density of the transparent electrode layer 146 or transparent electrode layer 147. Consequently, the alignment state of the first liquid crystal layer 144 is controlled, and a phase difference is given to the laser light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
