PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projection type display which has bright and high color rendering properties by using a planar ultraviolet emitting element for a light source and arranging a planar phosphor for converting ultraviolet rays emitted from the ultraviolet emitting element into fluorescence of a prescribed color and emitting the fluorescence. SOLUTION: The display includes a planar light source 10 consisting of the ultraviolet emitting element, a planar phosphor 20 provided with a phosphor layer for converting ultraviolet rays emitted from the light source into fluorescence of the prescribed color and emitting the fluorescence, an optical modulation means 30 for modulating light emitted from the planar phosphor on the basis of a provided image signal, and a projecting optical means 40 for projecting light modulated by the optical modulation means.
