PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the amount of internal EGR gas scavenged as much as possible, in a valve system for an internal combustion engine scavenging internal EGR gas during a valve overlap period. SOLUTION: In this valve system for the internal combustion engine scavenging the internal EGR gas during the valve overlap period by changing the working angle of an exhaust valve, a lift change rate when the exhaust valve is opened is reduced, thereby increasing an exhaust pulsation cycle. In this case, since a period when exhaust pressure exceeds intake pressure during the valve overlap period is reduced or eliminated, the amount of internal EGR gas scavenged is increased.
