A safety device for a tap or faucet, said device comprising an elongate member (10,110,210,310) adapted to extend between an operating handle (2) of a tap (1) and a portion of the body of the tap (1) to retain the operating handle (2) in its closed position, wherein a first end (12,112,212,316) of the elongate member is adapted to engage a portion of the spout of the tap and a second end (14,114,214,314) is adapted to engage a portion of the operating handle of the tap.
