<p>A container 2 having an opening, a pivotally mounted lid 8-12 and a latch assembly 20 having a handle 50 for manually operating the lid and an electric actuator (36, figure 2) to electrically open the lid, a spring 34 biasing the latch in the open position, the latch assembly and container having cooperating engagement portions 62, 63 to hold the lid closed. The latch may have a lever arm 30 or latch plate (figs 5-9), the spring 34 being mounted between a support 12 and the arm or plate. The actuator 121 may move a catch 38-40 releasing lever arm to pivot about pin 32 or latch stay allowing the latch plate to rotate. The actuator may be an electric solenoid, micro geared motor drive or pneumatic actuator. The handle and lever arm may pivot together by action of finger 60. The container may be a macerator for reducing paper based bed pans.</p> |
