Method for making a chlorosilane

SiH 3 Cl, SiH 2 Cl 2 , and combinations thereof are prepared in high molar yields with respect to silane in the feed stream by contacting silane and hydrogen chloride with a catalyst selected from solid acids and ionic liquids. Preferably, the catalyst is selected from molecular sieves, silica supported AlCl 3 , ionic liquids comprising Al n Cl (3n+1) wherein n ‰¥ 1 and combinations thereof.
