PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of inspecting surface defects of an automobile body and an inspection apparatus of surface defects of an automobile body, capable of accurately inspecting surface defects, even if the surface of a shell plate of the automobile body changes within a permissible range. SOLUTION: The method of inspecting surface defects of an automobile body includes a cut processing process (S32) having an illumination means 5, a camera 7, an inspection control unit 2, namely an image data storage means for storing image data of the camera 7, and an inspection frame control unit 10, namely a camera moving means for moving the illumination means 5 and the camera 7 for cutting unwanted frequency components by performing Fourier transformation of the image data; design approximate surface data creation processes (S33, S34) for creating design approximate surface data by performing three-dimensional processing of data subjected to cut processing; a differential processing process (S35) for calculating a difference between the data subjected to cut processing and the design approximate surface data; and surface defect determination processes (S36, S37, S38) for determining surface defects of automobile bodies, based on the differentially processed data.
