<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method for producing an aluminum titanate ceramic that shows little change in volume when heated. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the aluminum titanate ceramic comprises a step in which a starting material mixture that contains a titanium source powder, an aluminum source powder and a negative thermal expansion material and/or a precursor mixture, which is converted into a negative thermal expansion material by firing, is fired. Also the aluminum titanate ceramic which is obtained by the production method is disclosed.
