<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element that prevents leakage of light from the outline of a light intercepting part, and to provide a liquid crystal display device excellent in contrast. <P>SOLUTION: The optical element has in this order: a light transmissive base material; a light intercepting area formed in a pattern in order to section the base material into an opening through which light can pass and the light intercepting part by which passage of light is prevented; at least one intermediate layer; and a phase difference layer. The film thickness D of the intermediate layer is 0.5 μm or greater. When the surface of the base material is vertically viewed from above, the intermediate layer is sectioned into an intermediate layer opening area, which overlaps the opening, and an intermediate layer light intercepting area, which overlaps the light intercepting part. In a cross-section made by cutting one intermediate layer opening area through its middle part, the thickness of the intermediate layer in the area 90% inside a straight line passing through the middle part of the intermediate layer opening area and connecting the adjacent light intercepting parts is 0.9-1.1D with respect to the thickness D of the intermediate layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
