PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a high value-added monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon from a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon while suppressing excessive decomposition without excessively consuming expensive hydrogen. SOLUTION: A raw hydrocarbon oil including ≥50 vol.% of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and a sesquicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, wherein the total amount of the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and the sesquicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is <20 vol.%, is subjected to (1) a first step of bringing the raw hydrocarbon oil into contact with a hydrorefining catalyst having a molybdenum content of ≥0.5 wt.% and <8.0 wt.% in the presence of hydrogen to conduct desulfurization and denitrogenation while converting the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon into a sesquicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and (2) a subsequent second step of bringing an intermediate oil obtained in the first step into contact with a hydrocracking catalyst in the presence of hydrogen to convert it into alkylbenzenes, to produce a high value-added monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon including ≥20 vol.% of alkyl benzenes and <1.0 vol.% of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
