PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanning type image display device capable of shortening a time required until the start of image display by performing start-up processing of a low-speed scanning element and a high-speed scanning element at high speed. SOLUTION: The image display device is configured to execute first processing to move a scanning position by the low-speed scanning element to an invalid scanning area where a projection object is not irradiated with laser light, second processing to oscillate the reflection mirror of the high-speed scanning element, third processing to detect the oscillating state of the reflection mirror of the high-speed scanning element and resonant oscillate, fourth processing to generate an image display driving signal for driving the low-speed scanning element based on the oscillating state of the reflection mirror of the high-speed scanning element. During the execution of the processing whose processing time is longer than that of the other between the first processing and the second processing, the other processing is executed, thereafter, during the execution of the processing whose processing time is longer than that of the other between the third processing and the fourth processing, the other processing is executed.
