PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which controls conditions for toner image formation by performing a test image measuring mode without consuming a recording medium or extending the interval between images. SOLUTION: A control part 50 forms patch toner images for yellow and magenta at screen angles of 90°and 45°by image forming parts Pa, Pb when a test image measuring mode is instructed, and then transfers and superposes the patch toner images on an intermediate transfer belt 51. A toner height sensor 30 forms height distribution signals in the rotary direction by continuously detecting the height of the a patch toner image that are transferred superposed on the intermediate transfer belt 51. A control part 50 outputs the toner application amount according to integrated values in peaks by performing one-dimensional Fourier analysis on the height distribution signals in the rotating direction and separating the peaks for yellow and magenta.
