PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively further reduce the discharged amount of NOx while improving a fuel efficiency. SOLUTION: In this engine comprising superchargers (25, 30) for pressurizing suction air and an injector 10 for injecting a fuel directly into a combustion chamber 5, the excess coefficientλagainst a theoretical air-fuel ratio at least when the engine is warm is set to two or more in all areas of engine load, combustion by a compressed self-ignition is performed in the low load area of the engine, and the excess coefficientλis maintained at two or more since the supercharged amount by the superchargers (25, 30) is increased according to an increase in load in the high load area of the engine.
