PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass substrate capable of increasing strength more than conventional one in the glass substrate, on only one side of which a magnetic recording layer is provided. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the glass substrate 1, a raw material glass is worked and a disk-like glass base material 1a is manufactured. Etching is then performed on the glass base material 1a, and only one surface of principal surfaces 7a and 7b of the etched glass base material 1a is then polished and made substantially smooth.
