PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve gear for an internal combustion engine, wherein a return spring for a sub-rocker arm is compactly arranged to reduce the longitudinal length of a cylinder head. SOLUTION: The valve gear 50 for the internal combustion engine is provided for changing valve operating characteristics at the rocking position of a sub-rocker arm support 59B. It includes a cam shaft 151, an intake cam 153 to be integrally rotated with the cam shaft 151, a valve cam 52 for opening/closing an engine valve, a link mechanism 56 for transmitting a valve driving force to the valve cam 52, a holder 53 for supporting the sub-rocker arm support 59B, and a drive mechanism 60 for changing the supporting point position of the link mechanism 56. Herein, the sub-rocker arm 54 is provided which includes a roller 54A, an eccentric step 76, and a link 54D.
