<p>#CMT# #/CMT# Polymerizable compounds (II) comprising polymerizable groups bonded to a biaryl structure (I), either directly or via an organic group or spacer group, are new. #CMT# : #/CMT# Polymerizable compounds comprising polymerizable groups bonded to a biaryl structure of formula (I), either directly or via an organic group or spacer group, are new. A, B : optionally substituted aromatic or at least partially saturated rings in which CH groups can be replaced by N and CH 2 groups can be replaced by O or S. Independent claims are also included for: (1) liquid crystal medium comprising a polymerized compound (II); (2) liquid crystal display of the polymer sustained alignment type comprising a liquid crystal medium as above in a cell between two substrates, including a transparent substrate and a substrate with an electrode layer, where the compound (II) is polymerized within the cell by applying an electrical voltage. #CMT#[Image]#/CMT# #CMT#USE : #/CMT# (I) are useful for making liquid crystal displays of the polymer sustained alignment type. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# Liquid crystal displays produced using (II) allow pretilt angle adjustment and have a high resistance, low threshold voltage and low switching time. #CMT#ORGANIC CHEMISTRY : #/CMT# Preparation: (II) can be prepared by standard methods. Polymerizable Groups: Disclosed polymerizable groups are methacryloyloxy or 3-methyacryloyloxypropoxy groups. #CMT#EXAMPLE : #/CMT# A solution of 6,6'-diphenyl-1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (6.6 g) and triethylamine (11 ml) in dichloromethane (350 ml) was treated with methacryloyl chloride (3.7 ml), stirred overnight, concentrated and chromatographed to give 6,6'-diphenyl-1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol dimethacrylate, m.pt. 180[deg] C.</p> |
