PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect jamming of a recording medium at a transfer position in an early stage even when a detection means for detecting a recording medium or an alternative means cannot be set due to restrictions on cost or installation space. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier 15 on which a toner image is formed in accordance with image information; a transfer means 18 which transfers the toner image formed on the image carrier 15 to the recording medium; a discharging separation means 38 which is disposed on a downstream side of the transfer means 18 in a moving direction of the recording medium, and separates the recording medium from the image carrier by discharging the recording medium passing through the transfer position of the transfer means; and a separation failure detection means which detects current flowing in the discharging separation means 38 or voltage applied to the discharging means 38, and detects a separation failure of the recording medium according to a change in the current or the voltage between when the recording medium is normally separated at the transfer position of the transfer means 18 and when it is not normally separated.
