PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery capable of improving charge and discharge efficiency by suppressing dissolution of metal composing a positive electrode active material without causing deterioration of rate characteristics and capacity. SOLUTION: This secondary battery 100 includes an electrolyte 125 containing a cation able to be phosphorated, and a positive electrode active material 115 made of a phosphide reduced by phosphorating the cation in the electrolyte 125 during discharge. Electrification is balanced by reducing the positive electrode active material 115 during discharge to phosphorate the cation in the electrolyte 125, and dissolution of metal composing the positive electrode active material 115 can be suppressed. As a result, charge and discharge efficiency can be improved, and deterioration of rate characteristics and capacity are not caused.
