A method for giving resistance against herbicide to plants is provided to improve survival rate of desired plants against herbicide, so that the crop yield and quality of desired plants are enhanced. A method for giving resistance against herbicide to a plant comprises the steps of: (a) introducing a gene encoding coproporphyrinogen III oxidase into the chromosome of a plant in which the gene is operatively linked to a promoter and a termination sequence of the plant chromosome; and (b) expressing the gene within the plant, wherein the herbicide inhibits porphyrin biosynthesis or protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase, and is derived from a microorganism such as Escherichia coli and selected from (1) chloromethoxynyl, bifenox, chlornitrofen, acifluorfen and its ethyl ester, acifluorfen-sodium, oxyfluorfen, oxadiazon, 2-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(prop-2-inyloxy)phenyl]-2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-1H-isoindol-1,3-dione, chlorphthalim, TNPP-ethyl or N3-(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-dimethyl-5-propionylnicotineamide, and (2) compounds represented by the formula(2).
