PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external resonator type wavelength variable light source for wavelength variable operation with a high precision and at high speed. SOLUTION: An external resonator type wavelength variable light source 100 includes a wavelength variable light source part 16 which varies the wavelength of output light in conjunction with movement of a movable element 15a. It includes an actuator 14 for moving the movable element 15a, a wavelength detecting part 18 for detecting the wavelength of the output light, and drive control means (9, 10, 11) for controlling drive of the actuator 14 based on an error between a target wavelength and a wavelength detected bythe wavelength detecting part 18.
