Cells; arrangement.-A standard cell of the Weston type is provided with means for preventing the mercurous sulphate depolarizer 7 from coming into contact with the metal terminal 2. As shown in Fig. 1, a cork disc 8 having a central aperture 9 covered with a piece of muslin, silk, cloth &c. is fixed in the cell below the mercurous sulphate. The cloth covering over the aperture 9 may be omitted and the disc 8 may be replaced by an annular flange formed as a part of the cell wall. The cell wall may also be indented to form the apertured flange. The cell consists of a glass container having in the left leg an electrode 3 consisting of cadmium amalgam and in the right leg an electrode 6 of mercury. Platinum electrodes 2 are provided at the bottom of each leg and each leg contains a porcelain retainer 4 having a porous packing 5. The electrolyte 11 consists of a solution of cadmium sulphate. |
