LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND DRIVING METHOD THEREOF

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a driving method thereof are provided to form light guide channels in a light guide plate of an edge type backlight unit to modulate data supplied to data block channels in order to define blocks which can individually control brightness, thereby realizing local dimming. CONSTITUTION: Light guide channels of the first direction are formed on a light guide plate part. A backlight unit divides a surface light source by a light guide channel unit. A divided driving control circuit(16) determines dimming values of light sources(22) according to an input image analysis result. The control circuit modulates an input image by a block size unit. The control circuit partitions brightness of the input image into data block channels of the second direction. A light source driving unit(21) individually controls brightness of the light sources in response to the dimming values.
