PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool with a hard coat layer having improved chipping resistance during high-speed cutting work for hard-to-cut materials. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool includes a tool base on the surface of which a lower layer as a Ti compound layer, an intermediate layer as a reformed chrome nitride layer and an upper layer as a reformed aluminum oxide layer are formed with vapor deposition. TheΣ3 of the intermediate layer and the upper layer accounts for 60% or more of wholeΣN+1. When measuring the number and position of aΣ3 corresponding grain boundary existing facing an interface between the upper layer and the intermediate layer, 30-70% of theΣ3 corresponding grain boundary of the intermediate layer existing facing the interface forms a crystal grain boundary ranging from theΣ3 corresponding grain boundary of the upper layer.
