The system (3) has an exhaust gas cleaning unit e.g. particle filter (5), engaged into an exhaust section (4). A thermal energy supplying mechanism supplies thermal energy into the exhaust section, where the mechanism has a burner (14), fuel supply device, air supply device and a control unit (21). An air inlet of the burner is attached to the exhaust section. The air supply device has an oxygen sensor (15) attached to an air supply line (10) of the burner and an auxiliary air source (17) opened at a flow side in the air supply line for supplying ambient air into the air supply line. An independent claim is also included for a method for supplying thermal energy into an exhaust gas cleaning unit.
