PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a carbon steel material hardly causing peeling of a coating layer and having high strength and excellent durability, and to provide a carbon steel material having the above excellent characteristics. SOLUTION: The production method of a carbon steel material by surface treatment of a carbon steel includes: a nitriding treatment process of forming a nitride or nitrogen-diffusion layer on the surface of the carbon steel; and a molten salt treatment process of immersing the carbon steel after the nitriding treatment in a molten salt bath containing vanadium so as to convert the nitride or nitride-diffusion layer into a coating layer containing vanadium nitride and vanadium carbide.
