PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL (electroluminescent) device suppressing generation of defect such as dark spots and reduction of luminance and service life to increase reliability, and to provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The organic EL device 100 includes a substrate 20, pixels 2 arranged on the substrate 20, an anode 24 disposed on the substrate 20 per pixel 2, an organic function layer 30 disposed on the anode 24 and including at least a light emitting layer, a cathode 32 disposed on the organic function layer 30, and an auxiliary cathode 34 disposed in contact with a surface of the cathode 32 and positioned in an area between at least mutually adjacent pixels 2. The method of manufacturing the organic EL device 100 includes the step of forming the auxiliary cathode 34 by a vapor deposition method using a vapor deposition mask 50. At the step of forming the auxiliary cathode 34, the vapor deposition mask 50 is in contact with a portion 32b which is a part of the area between the mutually adjacent pixels 2 on a surface of the substrate 20 opposed to the vapor deposition mask 50 before formation of the auxiliary cathode 34.
