PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device that displays reference images on paper in an environment similar to the environment in which an ordinary calligraphy work is produced. SOLUTION: The display device includes a projector 15 that generates display image data Dp, taken from an external device 4, into display image data Dd, modulates light from a light source into a display image based on the display image data Dd, and projects the display image. The projector 15 is set obliquely above the surface of the paper 3 on which an image is formed. The display image projected to the set position of the paper from the projector 15 includes a reference image area in which the plurality of reference images for images to be formed on the paper 3 are arranged in a line; and a non-image area where there are no images.
