PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of modifying a wood which is designed to precisely impregnate even a board material or a conifer lumber by treatment such as dye up to a center layer and interlock the treatment by precisely modifying even a cellular wall of the center layer without distorting the wood. SOLUTION: The method of modifying a wood comprises a dipping process of dipping the wood in an aqueous alkali solution as pretreatment for impregnating the wood by the treatment, an impregnation process of pressurizing the interior of a container after the pressure reduction thereof, and a drying process of thermally drying the wood with the combined purpose of thermal treatment. Furthermore, an ionic modifier is arbitrarily added to the aqueous alkali solution. It is not necessary to boil the aqueous alkali solution and a drying process is carried out at 70°C or lower.
