The method involves providing a flat sheath (101) and introducing drawers in a form of fingers (132-135) in the flat sheath over a length of the sheath corresponding to the length of a ductile/retractable sleeve (100). A segment of the sheath is tensioned by deployment of the drawers in the sheath. The tensioned segment is separated from the racks with respect to the sheath to obtain the sleeve. The drawers are deployed along a shape of a tunnel according to a polygonal contour to place the sleeve on a product in order to stretch the flat sheath after separation of the sleeve. An independent claim is also included for an installation for gripping a ductile or retractable sleeve from a sheath to place the sleeve on a product.
