A banknote discrimination device allowing light amount adjustment processing to be performed easily while the device is being used. A banknote discrimination device is provided with: a light emitting element for applying light to an inserted banknote; a light receiving element for receiving the light transmitted through or reflected by the inserted banknote; and a control section which, after causing either the amount of the light emitted from the light emitting element or the amount of the light received by the light receiving element to be set to a predetermined amount at a predetermined timing, performs adjustment so that the other amount is within a predetermined range.
