PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a person detection system and method, capable of automatically setting a detection range of detection means so that detection ranges of a plurality of detection means do not overlap regardless of how the plurality of detection means are placed. SOLUTION: The person detection system, having a plurality of detection means disposed at different positions to detect an existence of a person within respective detection ranges, includes a determination means determining whether there is any period when two or more detection means among the plurality of detection means redundantly detect an existence of a person within a predetermined determination period and a control means which reduces the detecting range of the detection means, which redundantly detects the existence of a person within the predetermined determination period, to a predetermined level when there is a period when two or more detection means redundantly detect the existence of a person within a predetermined determination period.
