A cooling panel 31 is mounted as a liner on the outer shell 18 of a metallurgical vessel which is suitable for a molten bath direct smelting process having free space above the bath and into which the metalliferous material and carbonaceous material is supplied to the bath and smelted to molten iron and slag and gases released from the bath are combusted in the free space. The cooling panel has a panel body 36 formed from a single coolant tube 36 shaped into a zigzag configuration so that coolant can flow through the tube between inlet and outlet connectors 42. A plurality of rigid connectors 43 project laterally from one side of the panel body, extend through openings 45 in the shell of the vessel, and are rigidly connected 47 to the shell exteriorly of the vessel, so as to support the panel on the interior of the shell. The internal vessel wall may be lined with a plurality of appropriately shaped cooling panels.
