The system has a variable-ratio gear unit with a drive component e.g. bar (2), driven by a crank drive (7) of an internal-combustion engine (13), and an output element (4) driving a cam shaft (8) of the engine. An electrical machine (18) consists of a rotor (17) formed as a hollow wheel (1) of the gear unit and a stator (9) torque-proofly connected with the engine. Another electrical machine (14) consists of an external rotor (15) formed as a sun wheel (4) and a stator (16). The former machine is arranged with the elements of the gear unit in a plane perpendicular to an axis of the cam shaft. The electrical machines are designed as a generator or as an electric motor.
