PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for reading an image, capable of separating a rejected document from normally-read documents to be ejected, sequentially returning reread documents into a document bundle in an original document order, and reducing a time required for processing, and to provide a program. SOLUTION: Abnormal reading of a document read by a reading part is detected; an image read by the reading part and a detected abnormal reading result are stored in a memory by being related to a reading order of the document; an ejecting part is controlled to separate the document in which the abnormal reading is detected from the document in which the abnormal reading is not detected to be ejected to a stacking part; the reading part is caused to read again the document which is separately ejected to the stacking part and in which the abnormal reading is detected to obtain a reread image; and the stored image corresponding to the reading order is replaced with the obtained reread image.
