Disclosed is a beta hydroxy acid of formula (I) or physiologically functional derivative thereof selected from pharmaceutically acceptable esters, amides and carbamates, salts and solvates thereof wherein R1, R1' and R3 are all hydrogen, ABD is CH2-CH2, R2 is COOH, X is methylene, Y is CH(OH), Z is a bond and the other substituents are defined in the specification.
