A method for forming alumina particular material comprising: Providing a boehmite precursor and boehmite seeds in a suspension at a weight ratio not less than 60:40, the boehmite precursor comprising hydrated alumina and heat treating the suspension at temperatures greater than 120°C, converting the boehmite precursor in boehmite particulate material and calcining said particulate material to transform it into transitional alumina particulate material having an aspect ratio of not less than 3:1.
