The arrangement has a control device controlling a screen (3). A device determines a display direction (7) of a freely movable display element (4) in two dimensions. Another device determines position of the display element. A connecting device is provided between the direction determination device and the position determination device. The display system cooperates with a map, and includes an access to an externally stored map. An input device is provided for manual entering of the position of the display element. An independent claim is also included for a method for selecting a topographic object, which can be indicated on a screen of a display system.
