The apparatus has an optical sensor (22) which is arranged at distal end of otoscope instrument (20), for acquiring image of terminal boundary of auditory canal (11). A signal processing device (23) is connected with optical sensor, for determining area or separation extending perpendicularly towards to-be-measured region in the image. The distance between distal end of otoscope instrument and terminal boundary of canal is determined based on determined area or separation. An independent claim is included for method of measuring spacing distance between distal end of instrument and terminal boundary of canal.
