PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable smooth forward and backward movement of a body at high speed to thereby improve productivity and quality, prevent breakage and damage of machine parts, and save operation cost. SOLUTION: In a sewing machine including a body installed on both sides of a base to move forward and backward and heads installed on the body to move right and left, the forward and backward movement apparatus for the body of the sewing machine includes: frames respectively fixed to the tops of both side bases; timing gears installed in the front and rear fixed frames of both side frames in multi rows; a connecting shaft which connects both side timing gears disposed below the front fixed frame; forward and backward movement frames disposed on the frame to move forward and backward and connected to the body; rollers installed in the forward and backward movement frames in multiple rows to correspond to the timing gears; a timing belt which zigzags through the timing gear and roller and the timing gear and the roller, both ends of which are respectively fixed to the top of the forward and backward fixed frames; and a motor which drives the connecting shaft in forward and reverse directions.
