<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high focus with a compact set, in a projection color image display device or a rear-projection color image display device, by largely reducing the projection distance of a projection optical unit. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a projection lens device having two lens groups, a first enlarged image (magnification M1) formed by a first projection optical unit disposed most adjacent to an image display element is imaged once in a position closer to the image display element from a second projection optical unit. The first enlarged image is enlarged and projected (magnification M2, M2>M1) on a screen by the second projection unit. A field lens group having positive refractive power is disposed between the first projection optical unit and the second projection optical unit. Consequently, since the relation of F2 that is F value of the second projection optical unit and F1 that is F value of the first projection optical unit is F2=F1/M1, a super-wide field of view with an angle of view exceeding 90° can be achieved.
