PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuously casting a slab by which can be reduced the central segregation of the cast slab can be reduced which suitably keeping the temperature of each slab in the vicinity of the edge part in the width direction of the slab in the vicinity of the terminal of solidification without providing a complicated secondary cooling mechanism when slabs of various casting widths are continuously cast while being subjected to light reduction. SOLUTION: Regarding the method for continuously casting the slab, in secondary cooling from directly below a mold to the range in which the solid phase ratio f<SB>s</SB>of the central part of the slab reaches 0.7, the collision range of secondary cooling water is defined as the whole width of the long side face of the slab, also, in the range in which the solid phase ratio f<SB>s</SB>of the central part of the slab is at least 0.1 to 0.7, a temperature holding mechanism for suppressing radiation cooling from the short side face of the slab is provided, light rolling reduction is performed in the range in which the solid phase ratio f<SB>s</SB>of the central part of the slab is at least 0.3 to 0.7, and control is performed in such a manner that the solid phase ratio f<SB>s</SB>of the central part of the slab is 0.7, and the average temperature of the cross-section in the thickness direction of the slab in a distance from the edge part in the width direction of the slab to 1/2 of the slab thickness reaches≥800°C.
