<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an optically active α-trifluoromethylcarbonyl compound having a high optical purity. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the optically active trifluoromethyl compound comprises causing a compound, represented by the formula: R<SP>1</SP>-X<SB>n</SB>-CO-CHR<SP>2</SP>-W, to react with an electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagent having an aminosulfoxonium salt structure or a dibenzochalcogenium salt structure or with a hypervalent iodine compound-type electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagent in the presence of a chiral guanidine, chiral amine or chiral phosphazene base. In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a linear or cyclic hydrocarbon group, a heterocyclic group, an alkoxy group, an amino group or an acyloxy group, each optionally bearing a substituent, or a hydrogen atom; X is an alkylene group, =N-H, =N-R<SP>3</SP>, =N-OH, =N-O-R<SP>4</SP>or an oxygen atom; W is an electron-withdrawing group; n is 0 or 1; and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>1</SP>and W, or R<SP>2</SP>and W may each be linked together to form a ring.
