<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner which does not execute a useless phase control having no change in electric power and can prevent malfunction of a switching element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner has a magnet field DC commutator motor 8 which has an AC rectifier circuit, receives voltage full-wave-rectified by the AC rectifier circuit from commercial AC power voltage and actuates a rotary brush, and a second control circuit 22 for controlling the motor 8. The second control circuit 22 has a triac 17, controls the triac 17 by a trigger signal of a predetermined initial phase angle at the start-up and controls the triac 17 so that the power supplied to the motor 8 is increased by decreasing the phase angle of the trigger signal step-wise for every predetermined period of time. When the phase angle becomes less than a predetermined phase angle, the phase angle is fixed to a phase angle from 0° to less than the predetermined phase angle and the triac 17 is controlled by a trigger signal having a width not less than the predetermined phase angle.
