PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in conventional dot discrimination processing, it may be occasionally impossible to rightly determine whether a target document is a dot document. SOLUTION: A first feature pixel indicative of a first feature detected out of a document and a second feature pixel indicative of a second feature are detected. Further, a first feature pixel distance and a second feature pixel distance are calculated, respectively, from adjacent first feature pixels and adjacent second feature pixels. An average value of the first feature pixel distance and the second feature pixel distance adjacent thereto is defined as a feature pixel distance and only for the feature pixel distance in the case where the same value appears continuously, the number of times of appearance is made into a histogram.
