PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric culture apparatus with which a microorganism is cultured without leaking out of the culture vessel a gaseous substance or volatile material the microorganism produces. SOLUTION: The electric culture apparatus comprises the culture vessel 5 of a sealing structure equipped with an ion exchange membrane 6, a working electrode 9, a counter electrode 10 and a power source 12. In one tank, the working electrode 9 is immersed in a culture solution 4 which contains an oxidation-reduction substance 3, and in the other tank, the counter electrode 10 is immersed in an electrolyte. The microorganism 2 is added to the culture solution 4 and is cultured while potential difference between the working electrode 9 and the counter electrode 10 is given by the power source 12. In the electric culture apparatus, the working electrode 9 is in the culture vessel 5 while the counter electrode 10 is arranged on the outside of culture vessel 5. While the culture solution 4 is held in culture vessel 5, the working electrode 9 is immersed in the culture solution 4. When the culture solution 4 is held in the culture vessel 5, the position of the ion exchange membrane 6 is arranged so as to contact the culture solution 4.
