PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a lactone from a corresponding diol with high selectivity under a mild reaction condition, i.e. in oxygen or air, by a simple operation without using any additive. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the lactone, the diol is oxidized in the presence of a catalyst with gold-immobilized surface, which is obtained by immobilizing Au particles with a valence number of 0 onto the surface of a support, so as to obtain the corresponding lactone.
