A disulphide R.S.S.R, where R is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloaliphatic, is prepared from a mercaptan R.SH by oxidation with a solution containing cupric ions and bromide and/or chloride ions in a monoalkyl glycol or polyglycol ether together with from 3 to 20 per cent weight of water at a reaction temperature not exceeding 175 DEG F. The group R preferably contains no more than 8 carbon atoms. The method of recovering the product depends on what glycol ether is used as solvent, e.g. with the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, the reaction mixture forms two phases, one containing the disulphide and the other being the spent oxidation solution which is regenerated by oxidation with an oxygen-containing gas and removal of the resultant water; on the other hand with diethylene glycol monobutyl ether the reaction mixture is homogeneous. An example is given of the preparation of di-tert.-butyl disulphide. |
