<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow brightness control by part by the small number of light sources, and to improve contrast in a display screen when used as a backlight unit for a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight unit 100 includes an enclosure 102 having an opening 101 through which light is extracted, and a light source 103 disposed in the enclosure 102. The light source 103 is divided into x (x is an integer equal to or larger than 4) in a longitudinal direction of the opening of the enclosure 102 and is divided into y (y is an integer equal to or larger than 2) in a lateral direction, and at least one or more fluorescent lamps 106 are disposed in each divided area 105, and fluorescent lamps 106 are controlled to be lit by area 105. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
