PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system further improving fuel economy. SOLUTION: The variable valve system includes: a variable displacement oil pump 11 which can vary a pump capacity; a VVT 15 operated by hydraulic pressure generated by the variable displacement oil pump 11 to change valve timing of an intake valve; and an electronic control unit 16 functioning as a learning means. By decreasing the pump capacity of the variable displacement oil pump 11 while changing the valve timing to be advanced by operating the VVT 15, the electronic control unit 16 learns a minimum capacity learning value as a minimum capacity of the variable displacement oil pump 11, capable of operating the VVT 15, and at the same time, further learns a maximum advance amount learning value which is a maximum advance amount of the valve timing, capable of limiting torque variation within a tolerable range.
