PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a prescribed object such as a pedestrian even in a night travel by use of a visible camera imaging a visible image because an infrared camera is comparatively costly. SOLUTION: This device monitoring the periphery of a vehicle images the visible image on the periphery of the vehicle, and extracts a pair of object areas disposed adjacently in a horizontal direction in the image such that they correspond to a width of legs of a living body performing prescribed walking as a left area and a right area. The device calculates a luminance difference between a luminance value of the left area and a luminance value of the right area, investigates a temporal change of the luminance difference, and detects an inflection point wherein the luminance difference changes between a positive value and a negative value. When at least one inflection point is detected, the device decides that the pair of object areas represent the legs of the walking living body and that the walking living body is present on the periphery of the vehicle.
